As well as lots of lovely books we have many activities and events going on, including a Community Afternoon Tea, every Wednesday 1-3pm with free soup and a roll, more details below. Maybe think about taking up a new class? Or do you need to rent a space for an activity or to host a meeting? Read on to find all about what we have on offer here and also about the amazing volunteers who help to run this place, without them we wouldn’t be here.

Volunteer interviews: Eva and Rona

Eva

Why did you decide to volunteer here? Peter Ranken was my neighbour and I promised him that when I retired I would help in the library. I am glad that I kept my promise.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering here? Two absolutely favourite things are equal and it is difficult to say which one is better. It is a great team of volunteers managed by a good Centre Manager and makes this place special. Two, I have found that helping people gives me satisfaction.

Can you sum up the library in three words? I cannot do a summary in three words but instead three short sentences: The library supplies essential and irreplaceable community services. There is a caring environment, with volunteers generously giving their time. It provides social interaction for the public and volunteers alike.

Why would you recommend the library? It is a safe place and there is always something for everyone.

Rona

Why did you decide to volunteer here? When I retired, I didn’t want to sit in front of the TV all day, and I love books!

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering here? Being amongst books, and knowing what’s going on in the community.

Can you sum up the library in three words? Community, safe space

Why would you recommend the library? Libraries have changed over the years, it’s not just for reading anymore. There are many activities on offer as well as computer access and multiple different groups who can help you.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

We’re excited to announce that Gallery SE6 is moving to the Library! Run by artists Kate Emblen and Emily Brand.  It’s an opportunity for local artists to exhibit a collection of their works in a public space within Catford for a period of a month and have an opening night to launch their exhibition.

Gallery SE6 began in Ninth Life, they were there for 18 months before the pub changed hands and they moved to the Catford Constitutional for a year.  Unfortunately, this has just shut down and so they decided to move here and make the most of our new lovely exhibition walls which were funded by our Charity Art Auction. As an Arts and Heritage Centre, we are delighted by this addition and we look forward to putting visual arts in the spotlight. Please join us for the 1st opening night on 13 February at 6pm!

Anyone interested in exhibiting in this space should contact [email protected] or via a direct message on Instagram or Facebook @galleryse6.
